The story
East Berlin Ampelmännchen, cult icon
The East Berlin Ampelmännchen (little traffic-light man) with his wide hat was designed in 1961 by traffic psychologist Karl Peglau and survived reunification as one of the few GDR symbols the West loved rather than abolished. Today a Berlin landmark, a souvenir bestseller, and seen on every Berlin pedestrian light.
★ Heiner's tip
PastaLaden
In Weißensee: the PastaLaden at Langhansstraße 149, just 50 metres from Antonplatz with tram lines M4, M13 and 12. A small Italian restaurant that makes its own pasta — handmade and without frills.
