The story in the picture

The real New York — drawn live on the street

For 45 days I drew live on the streets — from Lower Manhattan to Brooklyn, Harlem, the Bronx and Queens, at more than 30 real places.

Famous landmarks and hidden corners: Washington Square Park, Times Square, Grand Central Terminal, Brooklyn Bridge, the High Line, the Unisphere in Queens, Chinatown, Wall Street's Bull, Central Park, the Ghostbusters firehouse — and even graffiti by local street artists and the subway mosaics.

A hand-drawn tribute to the energy, diversity and creative spirit of this city.

How the motif is made

Not in a studio.
On the street.

Drawn on location
01 · Live in the city

Drawn on location

Drawing on the street is my favourite way to get to know a city. I sit on my little camping chair, people stop, share stories and give me tips on where to draw next.

  • Drawn live for one month in another city
  • Thousands of encounters, the culture, the food
  • More than 100 hours of drawing – it all flows into the picture
Only ink and pen
02 · Handmade

Only ink and pen

Every motif starts as an original 80 × 80 cm ink drawing, made live on the street. Back in Germany I carefully scan and clean the drawing for printing.

  • Black ink (Rohrer & Klinger Ausziehtusche)
  • Dip pen (Leonardt 300)
  • 80 × 80 cm drawing paper, 300 g/m²
The city, my drawing, your home
03 · Urban Stories

The city, my drawing, your home

On my travels I discover something new to love about the city every day – and draw it into the picture. Maybe one day you will stand right at one of these places.

Spotted something in the drawing and want to know what's behind it? Message me – I'm happy to tell you the story or share the location.
